Edna St. Vincent Millay, was a prominent American poet and playwright, during the early 20th century.
Millay’s connection to Provincetown began when she became involved with the Provincetown Players. Millay contributed significantly to this movement by writing and directing plays that reflected contemporary social issues.
In 1919, she wrote the anti-war play “Aria da Capo,” which was performed at the Provincetown Playhouse. This one-act verse play showcased her talent not only as a poet but also as a playwright willing to tackle pressing themes such as war and its consequences.
The themes of love, nature, and feminism prevalent in her work resonated deeply within the context of the progressive ideals embraced by many artists living in Provincetown at that time.
