Filmmaker Michael S. Koehler spent decades inside the world of Spiritus Pizza, first as a summer worker and eventually as one of Provincetown’s essential documentarians. In this 63-minute film he returns to the place that shaped him, weaving together rare footage, street photography, personal testimony, and the oral histories of counter girls, artists, drag queens, dune kids, and late-night regulars who turned a simple pizza shop into one of Provincetown’s great cultural crossroads.
The film spans Spiritus’s early 1970s origins to the 1990s bar-rush heyday, capturing the queer community’s resilience through shifting eras — from the neon freedom of the disco years to the shadow of the AIDS crisis, and into the scrappy, creative, all-hours spirit that still defines the shop today. Spiritus becomes a stage where Provincetown’s larger story unfolds: a story of chosen family, survival, migration, joy, heartbreak, and the outsiders who built a world of their own at 190 Commercial Street.
